HVAC Lifts: Crane Signaling Certification  

Instructor: Mike Smith, Director of Apprenticeship, Int'l Union of Operating Engineers Local 487 

CEU Hours: 7 hours

Eligible for County Journeyman License continuing education? No

Description: This class is comprised of classroom training in regard to hand signal and radio commands for effective communication with crane operators. Attendees will take a written exam and a practical exam that includes performing proper hand signaling and radio commands to safely move various loads through obstacles. Upon successful completion of both the written exam and practical exam attendees will receive a crane signaling qualification.

Objectives: Upon completion of this class, students will: 

  • Confidently use OSHA 1926.1400 and ASME B30.3 and B30.5 approved hand signals.
  • Learned proper voice communication between a signal person and crane operator.
  • Know the correct safety techniques when dealing with clearings of power lines. 
  • Learn crane capacities and capabilities.
  • Participants who successfully pass the end of course written and practical exams will earn their Crane Signaling Certification.

Registration closes: Friday, July 23, 2025, or upon reaching max class size of 10.

Attendance Policy: You are required to attend each course in its entirety. You will receive your certificate and credit upon successful completion of the course.

No-Show/Cancellations Policy: Please be aware that cancellations made less than two days before the class begins, or failure to attend, will result in a $50.00 fee. All cancellations must be submitted via email to ceu@arpec.org. 

Continuing education: Participants who attend each course in its entirety will receive a certificate and continuing education credits.

Continuing Education Units: 7 hours

YOUR SAFETY:

Dress code: For your own protection, participants are required to wear:

  • Closed-toe shoes: Sandals or open-toe shoes are not permitted.
  • Long pants: Shorts are not allowed.
  • Long-sleeved shirts: Short sleeved shirts are not permitted.

PPE: Bring the following and wear them at all times in the shop or when working with your hands.

  • Safety glasses, and work gloves.
  • Plus any additional safety-related PPE or equipment provided onsite, as directed by your instructor.

Failure to comply will result in being removed from class.


Time

This is a one-day class taking place on Saturday, July 26, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Pricing

ARPEC’s training, funded via the labor contract’s hourly contribution, requires no registration fee or deposit. However, if you cancel within two days before the start of the class, or do not attend the class in full, you will be charged $50.00. If that occurs, that invoice must be paid in full before you can register for future classes. As an employee benefit trust, ARPEC is legally required to be a good steward of the trust's assets.
