Welding: Introduction to Shielded Arc Metal Welding (SMAW)

Description: This course will provide an introduction to Shielded Arc Metal Welding (SMAW) procedures. Attendees will learn about the required PPE needed for welding. Also, attendees will learn the different types of welding machines, and how to set up their equipment. This class will be held in the welding shop and will entail practical experience in striking an arc and depositing a continuous bead. Students will have the opportunity to practice various welding exercises that include welding in different welding positions during shop time.

Objectives: Upon completion of this class, students will: 

  • Identify the different types of welding equipment and PPE used for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW).
  • Identify the different groups of electrode classification and how to select the proper electrode.
  • Demonstrate the principles of sustaining a welding arc and how to check and adjust the welding equipment.
  • Demonstrate the essentials of arc welding, including proper arc length, travel speed, and electrode angle.
  • Perform various welding exercises such as depositing a continuous bead, moving the electrode in different directions, starting, and restarting the arc.
  • Demonstrate weld passes in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions.

Registration closes: Friday, June 11, 2025, or upon reaching max class size of 15.

Attendance Policy: You are required to attend each course in its entirety. You will receive your certificate and credit upon successful completion of the course.

No-Show/Cancellations Policy: Please be aware that cancellations made less than two days before the class begins, or failure to attend, will result in a $50.00 fee. All cancellations must be submitted via email to ceu@arpec.org

Continuing education: Participants who attend each course in its entirety will receive a certificate and continuing education credits.

Continuing Education Units: 7 hours

YOUR SAFETY:

Dress code: For your own protection, participants are required to wear:

  • Closed-toe shoes: Sandals or open-toe shoes are not permitted.
  • Long pants: Shorts are not allowed.
  • Long-sleeved shirts: Short sleeved shirts are not permitted.

PPE: Bring the following and wear them at all times in the shop or when working with your hands.

  • Safety glasses, and work gloves.
  • Plus any additional safety-related PPE or equipment provided onsite, as directed by your instructor.

Failure to comply will result in being removed from class.


Pricing

ARPEC’s training, funded via the labor contract’s hourly contribution, requires no registration fee or deposit. However, if you cancel within two days before the start of the class, or do not attend the class in full, you will be charged $50.00. If that occurs, that invoice must be paid in full before you can register for future classes. As an employee benefit trust, ARPEC is legally required to be a good steward of the trust's assets.
